Leader of Styx Discusses Feud with DeYoung and New Album
(JULY 2017) Rock legend Tommy Shaw spoke with affiliates of Envision Networks®’ Guest Services about the release of their first new album in 14 years, The Mission. Shaw is best known for his work with Styx, for which he helped to write some of the band’s greatest songs, including Too Much Time On My Hands, Fooling Yourself, and Blue Collar Man.
In an interview with Quinn and Cantara on WPYX-FM/Albany, Shaw clears up the rumors regarding the feud between former band member Dennis DeYoung and the rest of Styx. He explains that it didn’t begin with the band’s 1983 hit “Mr. Roboto”, it was just fundamental differences.
“It really began in between ’78 and ’79. There was a fundamental shift in how we were going musically,” Shaw explains. “It just never got better, it just kept getting worse. We split up for 13 years; we thought maybe time would heal that up. But you are who you are. We had a reunion in ’96 and that didn’t work out but we gave it a shot.”

“All these things that you wouldn’t expect to be happening this far down the line. It’s just been amazing,” said Shaw about the success of the new album. “This is a dream band that I’m in. These things don’t happen by accident.” In regards to playing 100 gigs a year, “It’s such a joy to suit up for it every night. That’s one of the great things about life is having something to show up for the next day and look forward to.”
